Hurstville Plaza will host an inaugural multicultural night market on Saturday, October 5 to showcase the diverse culture, crafts and cuisine of the many communities who make their home in the Georges River area.

The market is being presented by the Georges River Association in partnership with Business Chamber South (formerly the St George Business Chamber) who hope it will be the first in a series of night markets dedicated to celebrating and promoting cultural awareness.

The event aims to showcase the rich tapestry of traditions, cuisines, and arts from around the world, providing an opportunity for attendees to immerse themselves in a global cultural celebration.

"This event is a pilot and if it does well we will look at doing it on a more regular basis," Business Chamber South president, Tony Baddour said.

Mr Jun Qi, President of Georges River Association said the night market is designed to be a celebration of diversity and inclusivity, where people from all walks of life can come together to enjoy and learn about different cultures.

"We believe that fostering cultural awareness and appreciation is essential in building a more connected and harmonious society," Mr Jun Qi said.

The event is based on a Notice of Motion submitted to the council by Georges River Councillor Ben Wang back in April who called for a feasibility study for holding a weekly night market as a way of delivering a vibrant, thriving night-time economy for the local community.

At the time, Cr Wang said he knew of one Hurstville restaurant owner who cooks dumplings every weekend night and then goes to Burwood night market to sell.

"Similar suburbs like Chatswood, Burwood, and Eastwood, all of which boast thriving immigrant communities.

"Our community cannot wait for the night market any longer, especially when other councils have implemented similar initiatives successfully," Cr Wang said.

Highlights of the Night Market will include:

International Food Vendors: A culinary journey featuring a variety of global cuisines.

Live Performances: Music, dance, and entertainment representing different cultures and arts and craft stores with unique, handmade items from local and international artisans.

Interactive Workshops: Hands-on activities such as traditional crafts and cooking demonstrations.

Cultural Exhibits: Educational displays and information booths to learn about various cultural traditions and histories.

Local businesses taking part will include Taste of Shunde, YU Star BBQ Restaurant and Nepali Chaat Haus.
